I hate, hate, hate, when people blame POC for not having “correctly pursued education,” while ignoring the clear inequities of the distribution of academic resources..
First time I saw it was when I entered high school. My mother did a district transfer for me to go to the “nicer” school of my small hometown, which by the way, is by the border. This was due to my, then, desire of being in a dance program.
My best friends at the time went to the to other high school. At times when I’d go over there I couldn’t believe it... where was the funding? The programs?
But, the school was largely composed of POC while the other one, which I attended, wasnt. Actually, it was commonly referred to as “the white people school.”
And it was. In its entirety, there was a form of alienation. Alienation if you weren’t white- you felt that. I never discuss my high school experience because even though at times I’ve felt they were useless- they actually inspired my career choice.
But when I see people come on here and discuss that education is obtainable by anyone, I find it so unfair. It’s a privileged argument.
A society dependent on knowledge and education? Let’s start with addressing how educational experiences for minority students are unequal. Especially if you’d like to make it a “educate yourselves, then” argument
