It’s been said by many other people with much deeper perspectives than I many times but I think it bears repeating: Us white leftists/anti-capitalists need to get out of the habit of talking about white people as if we’re not white people.
The way we speak about topics like race has power and effect. If we routinely talk about white people as something separate from us or as an “other” even when we ARE white people, we will invariably start letting ourselves off the hook for our part in white supremacy.
Idgaf if it seems awkward to you to write “us white people” or “white people, including myself” it is IMPERATIVE, imo, that when we white people talk about race we make our inclusion in the system of white supremacy always and undoubtably explicit.
We don’t get to distance ourselves, even in language, from whiteness. We don’t get to create a distinction between ourselves and “other” white ppl. We don’t get to make jokes about how shitty white people are and, by so doing, imply there are separate categories of white people.
It is on us to recognize our place in and complicity with whiteness. We cannot be race traitors if we constantly go about denying our race, or if we secretly/subconsciously believe that we are somehow “less white” just because we agree that black lives matter.
As I said at the beginning of this thread, there are people who have been saying this and who can articulate it in a much richer way than I can. The threads I linked above are just a couple that I’ve found just today and are an example of that!
