Thread:

It seems we have sparked a counter culture within a counter culture

People who think guys like me love FLWs and hate LHW/HWs because I point out that the FLW was never as weak as people say it was

The reality is most MMA fans are just uneducated about the FLW division
What do I mean by that?

I mean that almost everyone you see talk down about the FLW division just isn’t educated enough on it. They refer to the fighters as “nobodies” and can’t give a real evaluation of their skillset. I’ve provided a thread of someone exhibiting this behavior https://twitter.com/lookatmyopinion/status/1264882085308837890
It’s clear when you read that thread, he doesn’t even have knowledge on all of DJ’s title defenses.

Now do you really think he can give me his thoughts on FLW contender matches like Cejudo vs Formiga/Moreno vs Pantoja/Dodson vs Makovsky?

It’s not just him. It’s most MMA fans https://twitter.com/ballerrogue/status/1264012345044373504
That’s the point I’m trying to stress here.

Most MMA fans heard the common narrative of “no competition” and therefore didn’t tune in. They have no conceptual understanding of FLWs skillsets and how good of athletes they are because they didn’t watch them during DJ’s reign.
This kind of ignorance leads to takes like the tweet I’m linking here. The claim was “they didn’t have to go on streaks to get a title”.

But a quick google search quickly confirmed that wrong and actually showed divisions like LHW gave title shots with less merit than FLW. https://twitter.com/lookatmyopinion/status/1264824356468936707
The ignorance spreads to calling someone like Reis a no name. Then shrugging off Sergio Pettis (who is undoubtedly a more technical version of his brother) as an insignificant win. I guarantee if I asked him about his opinion of Pettis vs Moreno, he couldn’t give me an answer https://twitter.com/kuntmonki/status/1264979933878726657
This is what we mean by surface level fans.

People who think the more popular you are = the better you are.

It doesn’t mean these individuals are stupid. But it is pointing out how UFC marketing can influence so many people to speak on topic they aren’t informed about.
And when you directly challenge their claims with evidence, there’s usually no response.

Because people don’t like to be wrong. https://twitter.com/lookatmyopinion/status/1264829626016247808
Then there are some people who actually break through the pure ignorance stage and recognize that FLWs were actually more skilled.

But there’s still a disconnect preventing them from giving any credit to them. Shrugging this off to “faster = more technical” which is not true. https://twitter.com/lookatmyopinion/status/1265072330570715137
All in all, after many debates over level of competition, I’ve come to a conclusion I feel like fits majority of MMA fans.

They just aren’t educated about the FLW division, and run with mainstream narratives.

In conclusion

Watch more fights please, then speak on them.
