For my white friends, I challenge you to reflect on the way you view white privilege. I can see how on the surface that it appears to be divisive by the name, but it may be a matter of the way that it is discussed or explained. Maybe this analogy will help.
I like to think of privilege as taking a shot at a basketball hoop. The more privileged you are, the closer you get to stand to the hoop when you shoot.
Technically speaking, everybody can still make their shot wherever they are on the court, but it's pretty obvious that making a layup is much easier than hitting a half court jumper.
If you completely ignore privilege, it's easy for someone to say, "Well look, this guy made it from half court, so everybody could do it if they worked hard enough or practiced hard enough." or "See, that person missed a layup. Do they really have an advantage?"
I'm not saying that you shouldn't get to play because you have an easier shot to make. You also shouldn't feel bad because you made your shot. You practiced, put in the work, or maybe you even got lucky. I'm not diminishing your accomplishments because of someone else’s situation
What I am saying though is how can we get other people more easy buckets? I want everybody to shoot layups. By recognizing that, we can take the steps to make that happen.
