When this evidence was brought to the public, the journalists I worked with were viciously attacked by the senior most editors at the BBC who called it ‘hearsay’ & ‘conspiracy’. The response from Cummings’ associates was bad, but most vicious was the abject silence of the BBC.
And that silence was amplified through the platforming of Cummings’ associates & staffers & politicians whose very names I had submitted to investigators & the authorities, the BBC being fully aware of this. Many of them allies of senior editors and executives.
It wasn’t just bad when I came forward. Several months later, when Dominic Cummings’ campaign was about to be fined for breaching campaign finance law (the largest known breach in British history) because of this very evidence, BBC coordinated a scoop on the fine with Vote Leave
Laura Kuenssberg, BBC News & the CEO of Cummings’ campaign, Matthew Elliot coordinated to release news of the fine AHEAD of the Electoral Commission. It was one of the most horrifying & nauseating experiences I had that year (and trust me a lot of sh*t happened).
I watched on primetime television as lie after lie was told with absolutely no critique or analysis from Ku*nssberg. I was defamed, and the very evidence that led to the fine again dismissed as conspiracy. She just listened. As the rest of the country was deceived.
All the authorities & lawyers around me were shocked. We couldn’t believe the fact that this was such a blatant attempt to change the story around what was happening: that Cummings’ campaign was found guilty of breaking electoral law.
A week later, when the Electoral Commission announced the fine...BBC News did this: https://twitter.com/shahmiruk/status/1112116144381538305
And this has continued ever since. They have consistently brought on the same people involved in electoral fraud to deceive and lie to the public with little to no criticism. But it isn’t just complacency. Many of these colleagues of Cummings (and Cummings himself) have very,
very, very close ties with many senior staff members at BBC News. They are friends, colleagues, constantly sharing a revolving door. And it is difficult for people with such close ties to the people they are meant to hold to account to do their job.
I don’t know what goes on in those offices at BBC News. All I know is that the systemic abuse many of us have faced for merely caring about what is in the public interest is being mirrored here with @maitlis. I can not stress enough how this has continued to endanger Britain.
I’m not saying all this to extend any hate toward those at BBC News. It is merely to highlight my own experience & their role in it. What’s sad is that I’ve become so scared of the BBC during this time and that’s purely because of the way they gaslit me, facts & proven evidence.
Just this year, this happened. https://twitter.com/shahmiruk/status/1191446605171511297?s=21 https://twitter.com/shahmiruk/status/1191446605171511297
What followed were blatant personal attack. In so far that I had to get my own lawyers involved. It was only when I went to Ofcom that BBC apologised for this situation. In fact, until I got my lawyers involved, they defended these actions as legitimate & truthful.
This was the second letter sent out from my lawyers. I don’t need to add much else. You can read it for yourselves and make up your own minds.
Personally, I believe in public broadcasting. I think that actually it is crucial in a democracy. Which is why I defend the BBC. It does not need to be disbanded or dismantled. It just needs its old guard changed, and a serious cultural reset.
