In light of the murder of George Floyd and the uprising in Minneapolis, it's important we push for evidence-based solutions. The American Public Health Association ( @PublicHealth) declares police violence as a public health issue. (thread)

Importantly, the statement from @PublicHealth highlights that there is very little evidence that solutions such as implicit bias training, community policing, and body cameras actually work to decrease police violence and increase accountability. 2/x

Instead, the statement urges solutions including transparency of policing data, decriminalization of activities shaped by the experience of marginalization, demilitarization of police, & shifting resources from policing to community-led programs. 3/x

Policing was historically deployed for social control of communities deemed socially marginal & policies & practices continue to sustain this intent. The system of policing is unjust at its root & the solution must be: #divest, #decriminalize, #dismantle.
