I saw this tweet this morning and it really got me thinking... https://twitter.com/yahomiekaleb/status/1265457111665971200">https://twitter.com/yahomieka...
This is an issue that is much deeper than having to talk to black children about the appropriate way to behave. Every parent teaches their child how they should or shouldn’t behave.
But in this case and most others like it parents of black children have to constantly worry if their child, especially if the child is a boy, will make it home safely because simply the color of their skin is an “intimidation” to others.
They have talks like the ones in this tweet about the potential dangers. I know my parents never needed to have that talk with me as do almost all white people. This issue has been at the front of media for a while but is usually headed by other black people pleading to spare
lives (as they should). But, in order for real change to happen there has to be an understanding amongst other races too. And by other races I mean white people. It is a privilege to walk down the street and no one think I am dangerous because of the way I look.
It is a privilege that when I get pulled over the only thing I worry about id the ticket amount and if it’ll add points to my license. Being black in America should not be a crime and all people should be held to the same standard. But it’s blatantly obvious they are not.
yet another black man who did not deserve it was killed by a police officer. He sat there with his knee on his neck while the man could not breath. George Floyd lost his life simply because he was black in the wrong place being arrested by a racist officer.
Ahmaud Arbery was shot and killed while out for a jog because he was black. If there was no video of these two incidents all the killers would still be free. In Floyds case they still are. All this madness has to end.
White privilege is a very real thing whether people like to admit it or not. These men died and many media outlets look for a justification. “He was resisting”. “He was being arrested anyway”. “He has been scoping houses to rob.”
But when a white man shoots up a school or other public setting it is all mental health and what could have been done to prevent it blaming people who may have bullied the shooter.
It’s a constant humanizing of white individuals who do wrong and making black individuals the villain at all times. That is privilege. I am sick and tired of seeing these things. They need to stop. We’re all American. Shit, we’re all human.
The first step is for some to realize their privilege and use it to advance ways to stop this. Hatred is learned not embedded in us. Teach love instead.
Last thing I’m gonna say is if you’re like me to remember how easy we have it. Privilege does not mean life isn’t hard. It means it isn’t hard because of our skin color. We have to stand with those who are getting victimized. #BlackLivesMatters
