I had a lengthy discussion with one of the guys I'm assisting with some of the aspects of running. It didn't make sense to him when I said in my response to @SelfieRunnerZA that 2018 was my best race even though I ran a PB in 2019. This is what I meant ... thread
I had the following targets, 2018 sub 2:50 (target achieved) and in 2019 sub 2:40 (target not achieved). I also used these runs to raise funds for my former club's CSI which makes it more than just running a PB.
In preparation of the race I follow a training program. I try my best to at least implement 85% of the program due to other commitments, I have also been studying for the past 3 years and this took most of my time. I then race one 10km/21km as part of the preparations.
The 10km/21km gives me an indication of my fitness level. I then prepare a race day strategy based on my readiness assessment outcome. In 2018 I managed to continue increasing my pace at each 5km segments in the second half of the race. The plan was to run negative splits.
Considering that I had a plan and successfully implemented it I rate the race as the best so far. While in 2019 I had a plan to average between 2:45/km and 2:50/km in the first 32km of the race then move to 3:40/km in the last 10km of the race.
I ran according to the plan until just after 24km and the body couldn't respond thereafter. I kept on fighting until the end of the race even managed to run a marathon PB however; I couldn't achieve the target. I have picked few things and I will work on them moving forward.
