Hey, colleague on a zoom webinar:
I see you, sitting at your desk, in some faraway office. I know your face. I know your name.

We met at a conference. It was maybe ten years ago. Maybe 12. Maybe seven. I don’t recall...
We were introduced by a mutual friend. We started chatting & quickly learned that we have some key things in common. Work experience. Upbringing. Fans of the same football team.

We had drinks. If I remember correctly, we hung around talking even after others turned in...
We added each other on social media and exchanged numbers. You work in different areas than I do - geographically & in terms of focus, but there’s overlap.

So we stay connected and find some ways to collaborate over the years...
But we haven’t connected in ages. And we haven’t seen each other for a long time, either.

Until today...
You saw me, I saw you. In the gallery. Among the participants in a webinar that happens to speak to the places our work overlaps...
You didn’t know me, of course.

Because I am not the person you remember. You remember someone who looked more like you. A goatee, a navy blazer, a button-down shirt.

You remember a guy. With a guy’s name and a guy’s demeanour and a guy’s life...
But he’s gone.

He’s not there anymore.

You didn’t see a trace of him.

You didn’t do a double-take, squint, and say “you look familiar...do you have a brother?”

You didn’t ask if I was “him” in different clothes.

Because I was clearly *not* him...
You *know* him, and if I was him, you’d know.

But you didn’t know...
So hey.

Hey, colleague on a zoom webinar...

Could you explain it to me?

How it is that, as far as you could tell, the lady in the little window is certainly *not* the guy you had drinks and talked football with some years back?..
How can you *not* see him, when I see him every single day?
