A thread of books I have bought almost solely for their covers and bindings, with pictures.

1) Death And The Afterlife, Clifford A. Pickover.
Sterling Publishing. Cover by Spencer Charles, int. design by Phillip Buchanan. ISBN 978-1-4549-1434-1. Nonfiction.

GORGEOUS endpapers.
2) Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea, Jules Verne. Printed by Sterling Publishing as a B&N exclusive. Cover&Endpapers by Bethan Janine Watson. ISBN 978-1-4351-6215-0.

Another one with nice endpapers and silver pages. One of my favorite Verne stories, and it was like, $10.
3) The Rose of Versailles, v1, Riyoko Ikeda. Udon Entertainment. Cover design by Andy Tsang. ISBN 978-1-927925-93-5. Manga.

This is a half lie- I was going to buy this anyway because it’s the first time it’s been printed in English. But the nice cover+binding is a huge bonus.
4) Dead Astronauts, Jeff Vandermeer. MCD/FSG Books. Designed by Abby Kagan, with additional credit for illustrations by Mario Tauchi and diagrams by Jeremy Zerfoss. ISBN 978-0-374-27680-5. Fiction.

I’ve raved about this one before, but it’s GORGEOUS, and IMMEDIATELY arresting.
5) My Best Friend’s Exorcism, Grady Hendrix. Quirk Books. Cover illus. by Hugh Fleming, design by Doogie Horner. ISBN 978-1-59474-976-6. Fiction.

Hendrix is a HERO insisting on cool covers for his books. This one is designed with PRINTED WEAR to look like an old VHS tape. RAD!!
6) Crier’s War, Nina Varela. HarperTeen. Jacket art&design, David Curtis. ISBN 978-0-06-282394-6. YA Fiction.

Finding this book was the most incredible experience. I was shelving at work, & the cover hooked me- then the inner flap that said “love between 2 girls” reeled me in.
7) Do You Dream of Terra-Two?, Temi Oh. Simon&Schuster. Jacket photo by Tino Soriano, design by Krista Vossen. ISBN 978-1-5344-3740-1. Scifi.

This was another case of “a book I saw while I was shelving and was immediately drawn to.” The cover has a subtle CRT-like effect!
8) The Price Guide to the Occult, Leslye Walton. Candlewick Press. I can’t find any attribution for the designer. :( ISBN 978-0-7636-9110-3. YA fiction.

Yet another “discovered while shelving” book- the red pages against the green and black is so STRIKING. And what a title!
