Controversial opinion! Reading scientific papers (particularly preprints where you cannot be sure that there are not major errors) is a demanding and tedious way of getting partial information. it's absolutely crazy to do it if you have qualified people prepared to summarise them
That's my opinion with regard to work where I would be reasonably confident of my ability to understand the underlying material. In virology, or if you're not confident in the maths, it's even more more of a bad idea to do the cognitive equivalent of rolling my own cigarettes
(the point of the cigarette metaphor of course being that the only reason not to leave it to the professionals is if you want to introduce some additional illicit substance for purposes of your own)
