Spent my morning on the phone with a mom whose son is incarcerated at Chuckawalla. From the time she learned from him about the first case until weeks later when he himself showed symptoms & tested positive for #COVID.
It's been over a week since his positive test. Him and the positive patients around him are living in an open dorm setting. He's going to work. He's fainted. He's yet to see a doctor.
The first case is said to have spread from the kitchen, where incarcerated people showing symptoms are still being sent to work there & tasked with feeding the prison.
"I would drive 5 hours to the prison if they would just let me give my son a box of orange juice".
Getting in touch with anyone at the prison to check on the status of her son's health has been impossible. Every number she calls she is told to call a different number. And every night she waits for him to call & hopes that he does.
Someone needs to tell these stories because for moms like her and anyone with loved ones inside it feels like no one cares. She ended our call with this: "Their basic human rights are not being protected. Everyone is saying we're all in this together. I've never felt so divided".
