What I think actually happened with the Tatler story: KP thought they were writing a puff piece. Even Tatler, including Kate‘s friend the editor, thought they were writing a puff piece. What nobody had thought of was that what works as a puff piece in Tatler, inevitably looks 1/7
like a hit piece to the general public, because that‘s not who Tatler caters to. Their readers, writers and subjects are an elitist bunch of aristos, “polite society“ favorites and other generally grand people. These are also W+K‘s social circle, that‘s probably why her 2/7
friends, if they really did speak to Tatler, thought their tales would make Kate look good. In these circles work is looked down on, self-made people are labeled social climbers and you only ever socialize with your own kind. It‘s the Eton, Oxford, Cambridge (and to a lesser 3/7
extent Saint Andrews) crowd. The ruling class. This is a cautionary tale of what happens when you let these ultra-posh friends speak on your behalf. It is not a coincidence that the editor of Tatler is the grandson of an Earl, they employ who they want to reach. 4/7
I want to add that these were also the people who Harry had to leave behind when he married Meghan. In these circles being black, being working class and being newly rich are 3 mortal sins. The combination was too much for them. That‘s why they find it tacky 5/7
when H&M socialize with people like Oprah or Beyoncé or anyone else who had to work for their money for that matter. They thought they could get away with it, because for decades “royal watchers“ admired and idolized these people. Always from a distance of course. But Meghan‘s6/7
arrival has brought with it a new kind of audience. A more egalitarian, critically thinking and frankly much bigger crowd of people. Their reaction exposed the snobbery, classism and racism behind the glamorous fassade. END OF RANT.
