We’re at the point in this crisis where a @nytimes article can casually state that a multibillion-dollar hospital chain “invests in hedge funds, runs a pair of venture capital funds & works with... The Carlyle Group” while receiving $509 million in govt relief WILL THIS EVER END
Of course this hospital chain, Providence Health System, is a "nonprofit" which "has nearly $12 billion in cash reserves" AND "has invested that money in hedge funds, private equity firms and real estate ventures." HOORAY FOR NONPROFITS
I mean so much radical structural analysis from decades of activist work is presented right here in this simple, easy-to-read, well-sourced article in the paper of record, but does this make any difference now? Will it lead to any meaningful change? https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/25/business/coronavirus-hospitals-bailout.html">https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/2...
We have two presidential candidates who will do everything they can to prevent us from having single-payer universal healthcare, and people think the greatest hope is that the one in the donkey outfit will choose a running mate who will magically convince him? WHAT A NIGHTMARE
Meanwhile, I’ve been avoiding going to the naturopath because their office is connected to a hospital, and now I realize this hospital is run by none other than Providence Health System. They control whether we live or die, while taking our blood and investing it in hedge funds.
I don’t want to ever walk through those doors again, really I don’t. How will I? And yet, I will need to. This is what healthcare means in the grossest, most violent, richest country in the world. Even when you actually have access. Our lives and deaths are just venture capital.
