ASTRONOMY AND INDIAN SCRIPTURES: BASIC UNDERSTANDING

1/11

Galileo made advancements in telescope in 1609 & eventually obtained 23x magnification. He deduced understanding of planetary movements from it and finally brought back to life Heliocentric Model proposed by Copernicus.

However Indian Scriptures are much much older and our scriptures have described earth, skies and bigger cosmos, however not for contemporary reasons.

For example, earth is spherical (भू-गोल) has been described in many Scriptures, Nrusinh Puran Adhyay 30 to quote one.

Various constellations too have been described at numerous places. However to quote one, Mahabharat Anushasan Parv, Dandharma Parva, Adhyay 64 describes all constellations (Nakshatras) however w/ a backdrop of importance of various donations in those Nakshatras.

Calculation of movements of each planet and constellation is described in detail in Jyotish Shastras. Cosmological distances are described in Ling Puran.

How do continents on Earth look like is described. Someone sketched continents based on a Shloka described as follows..

How does planet earth actually look like is described. Study it from attached thread in this tweet.

In Astrological Sciences, planetary transits through various constellations, eclipses etc can be accurately found. Its well documented. https://twitter.com/1vishalpandya/status/1227140789026705408?s=19

Simhasth Kumbhmela (सिंहस्थ कुंभ) is held approximately every 12 years when Jupiter (गुरु) is in Leo (सिंह राशि).

Do we realise that our ancestors were very well aware that periodic time of Jupiter is approximately 12 years? Panchang gave accurate dates for the purpose.

Our ancestors off course were well aware that there are nine planets in solar system.

Bhagwan Ved Vyas compiled Navgrah Stotra which many of us would be reciting. See attached image.

Next question is: Did they really know how to calculate smaller time periods? Read on...

In Mahabharat Shalya Parva, Gada Parva Adhyay 34 Balram ji based on number of Nakshatras elapsed calculates number of days he spent (or vice versa) in his pilgrimage tour.

Next question is, did they know only about cosmos or any other sciences too?

They clearly understood that high tide and low tides occur due to moon. Again Mahabharat, Adi Parva, Astik Parva Adhyay 21

Ready for one more surprise? Capillary Action is described in Shantiparva, Moksha Dharma Parva, Adhyay 84, Shloka 16. See second picture attached.

If funded, this can evolve atleast into a subject if not more. What I presented here is not even a trailer (or teaser as they say these days) forget about it being exhaustive.

Carl Jung studied Bhagwat & coined Extrovert/Introvert words from अंतर्मुखी बहिर्मुखी इंन्द्रिय

Types of plants, animals, hibernation & what not? I have come across all these concepts in our Scriptures.

Hope we honour our treasure
