This is my son. He loves cheese and Spider-Man. He loves to tell silly jokes and he can dance like nobody’s business. We knew he was extremely musically inclined at 5 months old. He loves to cuddle and play with bubbles. He adores his sister and cats. He is exceptionally-
bright. He has tiny feet and an uneven hairline. He has a birth mark on his leg and another on his wrist. He pretends to be a cat most mornings before breakfast. He likes to sit with me while I put on makeup. Now that I’ve described him, is that enough?
Is that enough for you to see him as a human and see his life is as valuable as mine? As yours? Do I need to post human qualities for every black person in the country for you to see them as such? If I do, will you stop killing them? Skin color is like hair color.
Everyone has it. Mine is fair. Yours might be olive or tan. My son’s is a gorgeous brown . Do we notice hair color? Yes. Do we discriminate and kill based on hair color? No. The same should be true about skin. If you feel the need to kill someone based on the fact that they are
black, the issue isn’t with the black person. It’s with you.
