hey white folks, we need to be mindful of how we share our sentiments around the violent anti-blackness in the news today & recognize that graphic photos, videos, and descriptions are deeply traumatizing.
that being said. amy cooper's fear is racist. but i don't believe she was afraid. i believe she was aware of the power her fear holds & used it strategically. also. i don't believe in good cops. to be a cop is to perpetuate white supremacy on a systematic level and that's it.
the past several days have showcased the actions that lead up to violent police intervention, and the aftermath of violent police intervention. all of it racist. all of it is anti-black.
the idea that the police provide safety is a white myth & the longer white people scramble to present "good cop" exceptions, the longer we are ignoring, enabling and in many cases actively playing a role, in severe violence.
& finally, white women: if, when the conversation demands the abdication of police because of racist violence, our instinct is to make it about our need to feel safe? that is extremely troubling. amy cooper's "safety" is an act of attempted murder. think about that.
