Hi Conor,

Wijnaldum hasn't gotten an assist in 59 90s and only has a total expected assists of 2.7 (0.05 per 90). However, this raises the question:

What is Gini's role? Klopp has utilised him much differently since the 16/17 season and statistical increases occur with roles. https://twitter.com/cmclarnon89/status/1265677685579186176
In 2016-17, our very own Pogba played deeper in midfield and did not pick up many assists however it was probably his best season for us.

When a player fulfills certain roles in the game their statistical contribution will increase in certain aspects.
If this statistic was levelled at Trent — his role is to create — then it would be a valid criticism. However, Wijnaldum's role isn't to create but to facilitate creation by transitioning, finding pockets for progression and acquiring territorial advantage for Klopp.
In that particular regard Gini is valuable and is an asset which Klopp relies on in his midfield. I am sure the vast majority of LIV fans would agree that Gini is valuable but often in an indirect way which cannot be easily seen or depicted comfortably through statistics.
This was a nice comment, Conor, as it facilitated the dialogue on statistical contribution and roles which I'm sure others such as @babuyagu and co. would be more than happy to jump in on with their thoughts.
