Thread: America, Colin Kaepernick, white privileged, freedom, patriotism, and the ease w/ which racism is carried out. I’m going to share two videos of pastors in my town who degraded Colin Kaepernick during a “One Nation Under God” sermon series for the 2016 election. 1/
Don’t think this happens in a bubble. This message is conveyed in more American social circles than we can count. You may say, but that’s just one man’s opinion. But how many in the congregation got up and walked out? How many went back the next week? How many kept tithing? 2/
If you wonder how Rodney King, the Central Park 5, Trevon Martin, Sandra Bland, Walter Scott, Philando Castile, Eric Garner, and George Floyd all ended up on the receiving end of fear mongering, and ultimately death, this is how. It’s the “I’m not racist...but” messaging. 3/
The fear mongering is cloaked in “patriotism”, “respect”, “don’t question authority”, and “know your place”. It’s cloaked in painting someone like Colin Kaepernick as a trouble maker for having the audacity to peacefully take a knee. Racism is embedded in our communities. 4/
We watch it, we hear it, we tolerate it. And there are TOO MANY white people who will shoulder shrug; who show up for the next sermon; who circle the wagons...”but my friend isn’t racist”. Ppl of color will continue to die until we admit racism has been an American value. 5/
