Thread: Finding A Culturally Competent Therapist
First things first, one person can belong to many different cultures. This includes race, gender identity, orientation, age, ethnicity, etc.
Just because I’m a black woman, that doesn’t mean that I will automatically connect with a black woman provider.
There are a lot of different directories to help you find a therapist to fit your specific needs. Let’s start with @therapy4bgirls
@hellodrjoy not only created an amazing podcast for both therapists and clients, but also recognized a need to support people with finding clinicians who look like them. (Without having to scroll through 18 pages of pictures of people who don’t).
@therapy4blkmen provides another source of clinicians, who are comfortable/acknowledge the unique needs of black men.
http://Therapyforlatinx.com  gives clients the opportunity to rate their providers. Don’t forget that each persons experience is different and we have to take this into account when reading reviews.
Not a directory, but http://affirmativecouch.com  has trainings to help therapists expand their knowledge of LGBT+, kink, and CNM mental health needs. They also have awesome articles geared towards each community.
@nqttcn, the National Queer and Trans Therapists of Color Network, also has a directory to help QTPoC with finding clinicians who identify as QTPoC.
And of course @PsychToday...which I’m sure you’ve already come across if you google anything remotely therapy related.
This isn’t an exhaustive list by far, but it’s a starting point! As I find and review other directories, I’ll add them to this thread.
