i buy groceries on my way back home from the hospital every other day. it’s always from this one general store where i buy the breads and the mother dairy right across, where i get the milk products. today while i was in line, one of the ladies muttered to the man next to us:

“why is she wearing that cap and another mask on top of an n95, what’s w/ the kids these days? everything’s to become a fashion statement to this generation. mazak ho raha hai inke liye”

to which i turned around and asked if she had anything to say to me. she repeated the same query about my surgical cap - that so much of protection is unnecessary and that i was overdoing it w/ the cap. accusing me of creating a sense of scare in the people around me.

before i could reply, this uncle who runs the general store told her, oh so very politely, “ma’am she’s a doctor returning home after work and believe me that she’s wearing that cap and the double mask MORE to protect you and me and others around here, rather than herself.”

at that moment, i realized we don’t have to fight all the fights on our own. that even though there are people who try to put their noses where it doesn’t belong, there are also people who’re looking out for you. and that one day it’s going to get better.
