When I got my first NYC internship in media I was paid $10 per hour, worked two other writing jobs, used savings, and had help from my family to cover rent and cost of living expenses for the summer

Internships are such a critical opportunity to grow as a professional but also learn about yourself, your motivations, they offer a chance to live on your own, discover what you really what to spend your life doing, make friends, network, learn how to cook!
Remote internships lower the barrier to entry for folks who can’t cover relocation costs and living expenses that would price out people who cant afford to take the opportunity. the two other writing jobs i had were remote, but the first required me to be in NY/NJ
I realize that companies might not have the bandwidth or resources right now to host a remote internship program (even though some of these companies are huge) but it’s a shame that instead of trying to figure it out, they’re cancelling
While some colleges have started offering grants so students can relocate for internships, it’s not widespread and I’m not sure there is a national program to help. (If you know of programs please reply with them so others can see)
Remote internships create more equitable access to professional development opportunities and right now would be the time to experiment but sadly it doesn’t seem to be happening much yet. I hope that changes. Thread inspo from @erica_pandey @axios: https://www.axios.com/students-internships-home-coronavirus-29fa36dd-51f4-43a6-b857-33f629ebb8dc.html
