Hey, #nmpol, I wrote a letter to the editor in response to the @ABQjournal endorsement of five senate conservatives last week. Haven’t heard back, so I guess they’re not printing it. This is what it said:
(thread)
The Journal's recent endorsement of five conservative senators who call themselves "Democrats" suggested that Clemente Sanchez engaged in something called "compromise" regarding the minimum wage. That's an odd way to describe what happened to House Bill 31 in the 2019 session.
I would respectfully ask: who was he compromising with? The House of Representatives had approved the bill, the Governor supported it, and it also had the votes necessary to pass in the Senate, until Senator Sanchez and his cronies (who the Journal also endorsed) inserted...
..themselves into the process by killing a good bill in committee and replacing it with their own watered-down version, Senate Bill 437. That's not a compromise, it's a shakedown. And, as anyone who pays attention to campaign finance reports knows, the protection money has been..
...rolling in for all five of these so-called “Democrats” from the well-connected corporate interests they actually represent.
Clemente Sanchez, Mary Kay Papen, John Arthur Smith, George Muñoz, and Gabe Ramos are not representing their constituents’ interests.
The fact that Republican-connected Super-PACs are spending half a million dollars supporting them in a Democratic primary demonstrates how far these senators have strayed from the values of their voters and their party.
I encourage Democrats to vote for Pam Cordova, Carrie Hamblen, Neomi Martinez-Parra, Noreen Kelly and Siah Correa Hemphill in the June 2 primary.
