True story...

My wife (fiancé at the time) lived in a 2 bedroom apartment for 2 1/2 years from age 23-25

During this time, I was accepted to the Naval Officer Candidate School (OCS) to become a Surface Warfare Officer (SWO)

It was a LONG and ARDUOUS selection process
During the selection process is when I discovered personal finance

The selection process from start to finish took 14 months

I then made the difficult decision to turn down the OCS offer, in lieu of betting on myself and financial future

Then the next part...
I sat my wife down in our apartment and told her I& #39;m declining the OCS offer

I then told her I was done paying $2,000/month in rent, and I wanted us to move back in with my parents to aggressively save for a 20% home down-payment

She expectedly cried her eyes out
We live in the Northern VA region, where decent townhomes sell for around $300 - $400,000

Which required us to save up a potential $60 - 80,000 down-payment

2 years later, we finally purchased our dream starter home for $330,000, and move in next month
There were many people along the way who made fun of us for moving back in with my parents, to save up for a home down-payment

We couldn& #39;t have cared less about their opinions, and are forever grateful for the position we are now in because of it
