We are all Russian serfs for the Tech Barons working so hard tap tap tap on our little keyboards all day long making free content on social media for the oligarchs to harvest for $$$.
When we hit the 21st century, the last sphere yet to be ravaged & commodified was that of selfhood. Now, we are delighted to spend hours and hours of time toiling in the social media fields for technocracts. MAYBE for the occasional serotonin treat of a good meme or viral tweety
Some have emancipated themselves from the serfdom by finding ways of making a BUCK on the Tech Baron’s dime doing “influencing.”
All (casual or for profit users of social media) have become dependant on the addictive property of engagement from their peers. Vitriol, shame, fear mongering, & hot takes seem to rally eyeballs most effectively.
This brings me to the question of virtue vs opportunism which I have been thinking about of late. When you are posting. Is it for virtue? Or for opportunism?
I am a wretched and unrepentant opportunist, as it affords me the small pleasure of living through Serfdom in the company of vice. I am but a humble country labourer, smiling from the fields at Tsar Cuckerberg as I give him the finger.
As my lord & saviour the Marquis De Sade once said in the Bible: “In order to know virtue we must first taste vice.”
Here’s a picture of me in an Armani jacket that doesn’t belong to me
