[[[THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE LORE THREAD]]]
Where to begin, well I suppose with the author.

The Reverend W. Awdry was an anglican clergyman who had a fascination with trains and wrote the first stories for his Christopher Awdry who was sick in bed with the measles. Pictured below is the original model of Thomas.
The Island of Sodor is situated in the Irish Sea between the Isle of Man and Cumbria. Its people are of the celtic stock while their language, Sudric is closely related to Manx.
As described by Awdry, the Sudrian character is one of the most stubbornly conservative in the British isles. If anything new is introduced to them and it can’t conform to their traditional way of life they politely reject it wholesale as they do with their numerous occupiers.
The Romans never bothered with Sodor, they were driven off by the locals on their first landing. And such Sodor would not be civilized until it was first Christianized by St. Patrick and the Iona School with the first missionary being St. Luoc and the island’s patron St. Machan.
Machan lived as a missionary and a hermit in the mountains of Sodor. The mountain is now called Culdee Fell which in Sudric means “Companion of God Mountain”. His cave dwelling is a major pilgrimage and religious site on the island. He also has an engine named after him.
Sodor’s earliest political beginnings was under the Kingdom of The Isles led by Godred Crovan. (known in legend as Starstrider) The Earls of Sodor are his fictional descendants. The Kingdom would last until the 13th century when Sodor would briefly become independent.
The Regency Period saw Sir Arnold De Normanby (a descendant of Godred) as regent until it was beaten by the English, but Henry IV showing much wisdom made Normanby and his descendants the island’s governor in order to prevent any further rebellion on the part of the Sudrians.
The Reformation was very soft on Sodor. While the monasteries were dissolved the local nobility saw that their buildings were not destroyed and their monies sent to support the Church there. There were no anti-catholic penal laws on Sodor and generally no animosity betweeen sects
While it’s not 100% confirmed by the author it is heavily implied that the Earls of Sodor were jacobites. As their Earldom was extinguished by Attainder (for treason) in 1715 the same year as the Jacobite Risings in that part of England. As well as being part of the Celtic Fringe
The next major chapter in Sodor’s history was the coming of the railways. In short all the pre-grouping railways on Sodor were not that successful but after a government merger during WWI in fear of potential Irish Republican invasion the North Western Railway was born.
Over the years Sir Topham Hatt has collected quite the assortment of weird typically one-off engines from all over Britain. After nationalization of the railway network by British Railways, Topham did his best to keep Sodor as a safe haven for steam.
I could go into the histories of each railway and of all the engines but this thread is long enough as it is. So for now, that’s all folks!
