tw: suicide, self harm and emotional manipulation

so i wasn’t online in the past 17 hours or so and i know i’m late to this, but i wanted to talk about this topic already a few weeks ago, but then ended up not doing it, so i think right now would be a fitting time to do it.

and since i missed what happened and the tweets from that account are gone, i can only go from what i‘ve seen on my tl, but i think it’s enough to get a rough idea of what happened last night.

i think emotional manipulation is a general problem this fandom has because i see it happening on a smaller scale all the time and i think most people who do it are hurt themselves and that’s why they might not even realize they’re doing it because try to find someone to blame

for their personal problems and/or blow things out of proportion.

and now and then i also see it happening on a bigger scale unfortunately. people telling others that they’re self harming or thinking about suicide because of a certain group of people or just one person.

and yes there’s mean people on this app and there’s definitely actual bullies in this fandom who can influence one’s mental health, but every time i’ve seen it happening in this fandom, it was because of a discussion about a fictional ship...

nobody deserves this happening to them, no matter if you like them or not, it’s gross and unacceptable.

but what’s interesting to me is how some of those people who are rightfully disturbed by what happened, reacted almost in an opposite way to something similar a few weeks ago

when someone told one of my mutuals to die because of a simple conversation about fanfics. some people even joked about it, liked tweets about how they would laugh about it again. and my mutual still hasn’t gotten an apology from that account and only an ingenuine one from

another person involved.
trying to emotionally manipulate someone with suicide and telling someone to commit suicide (and then even joking about it when being called out and downplaying it) is not okay, it’s both disturbing, but for some reason the reactions to it (even from

some of my own mutuals if i’m being honest) were quite different...
