Canada was Ground Zero for the beginning of the first Cold War. We& #39;ll soon find out if we& #39;re fated to be Ground Zero for the beginning of the next one. #IgorGouzenko #MengWanzhou
Regardless of the outcome, it& #39;s clear that our elites, many of whom swore that Saddam had WMDs & nukes, will demand that Canada once again carry water for America& #39;s arrogation of global "moral leadership" in the fight against yet another existentially threatening Asiatic horde.
It& #39;s difficult to tell whether this new Cold War will be as destructive as the last, which saw millions slaughtered from Indochina to Afghanistan--all to ensure that the Russkies didn& #39;t parade down Pennsylvania Avenue. But it& #39;s likely to have equally degrading effects on Canada.
Hardly an outrage against Canadian civil liberties & human dignity occurred in the last century that wasn& #39;t inspired by the Cold War or anti-communist paranoia: the suppression of progressive political organising/speech, the persecution of gays on "national security" grounds...
...the mass surveillance of law-abiding citizens (often at the request of the US), Duplessis& #39; anti-progressive Grande Noirceur, & the mass arrests of the October Crisis are just a few. In terms of individual tragedy, we must mention Herbert Norman. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._Herbert_Norman">https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._H...
If the potential global destructiveness of Cold War II is too remote a consideration, think of how the 1st Red Scare degraded our society & imagine that kind of disfiguration but amplified tenfold by our greater technological capacity for destruction & the US descent into madness
Just something to ruminate upon the next time some CPC shill or NatPost hack calls for all-out war because the CCP aren& #39;t very nice fellows.
