If you think that Cummings is remotely bothered about what people think regarding whether he did or didn't drive sixty miles to Barnard Castle, think again.

What distinguishes this new breed of technofascists is their fanatical zeal. There are dimwitted, thub-tumping nationalists, sure. There are greedy cynical opportunists. But there are also many True Believers. This is what makes them especially dangerous.
So it's not just familiar Tory cronyism, pocket-lining, jobs for the "right people" sleaze (although it is that too - they're Tories, ffs). This is something much more systematic and darker: nothing less than root-and-branch societal reform along the lines these fanatics see fit.
BUT. Their great weaknesses are hubris, a fundamental lack of insight beyond a capacity cunningly to manipulate, and a a bona fide - I use the word deliberately - madness. Grand, totalizing visions always eventually smash with terminal velocity into the cliff-face of Reality.
COVID-19 is one such reality. Climate breakdown is another. The fundamental cussedness and scepticism of a large sector of the British public is another.
They'll fail. But they'll cause a hell of a lot of chaos and suffering first - they already have.
