I've been enjoying the #ConservationTogetherAtHome webinar series immensely in recent weeks (I catch up when I can) & one talk in particular struck a chord with me: 'Sustaining Objects: Narrative & Outreach' by Emily Williams. I took the liberty of jotting down a quote from her:
I LOVE narrative & one of my favourite things about conservation is that it straddles humanities & science. I'm a huge science nerd but clinical language & stark tables of data can be a real buzzkill: the non-fiction literature I love most tells a story. They *evoke* something.
Here's another quote from Emily that I really loved: maybe if we shed the lab coat and embrace how human we are (and how we often *feel* things for the very collections we encounter) we can discover something really vital about ourselves. As conservators, as people.
In some ways that's why I keep The C Word so conversational: so much time is already spent being scientists, crunching numbers, writing reports or books. Those are all good things but leave very little room for a cup of tea and a chat about why an object makes you sad or happy.
I really recommend you listen to Emily's talk in full here:
