FYI
1. Yesterday we saw an example of white female supremacy, something rarely talked about despite its impact on America's racial history & more specifically its impact on black people over the centuries. Fact, white women are the 2nd most powerful social class in our country.
2. Pro-confederate white women were influential in developing the "Lost Cause" narrative after the South lost the Civil War. They were also influential during the Slave Era & were known to be just as brutal as white men regarding their treatment of slaves.
3. In so many ways, white supremacist women are more dangerous to black men than white supremacist men. White supremacist men can offend with words, White supremacist women have gotten black men lynched or put in prison (destroying their family) with the power of their words.
4. Yesterday, we saw a white woman (likely liberal/progressive) in a park walk in a long line of women who cane before her, she was a white woman who understood the power of her words & tears and she wielded their power to try & get a black man jailed at best & killed at worse.
5. There are two common dynamics I see at play w/ many white women. On one hand, some are sensitive to the plights of black people b/c they themselves have known some degree of oppression or marginalization. On the other hand, I’ve seen white women who know their power & use it.
6. BUT, even those who to some degree are able to relate, I have still clearly seen white female supremacy at work among them. I have experienced white female supremacy both in conservative Spaces, liberal/progressive spaces, AND absolutely in the white abuse survivor community.
7. There’s a dynamic at play among white survivors. They’ve experienced abuse of power & have had power taken from them & so they have felt powerless. Some have been able to relate this powerless to racial oppression & become allies. Others, wield their social power against us.
8. As a black man in ministry who also spends time in the abuse advocacy world, I’ve learned that I must tread carefully around white women. I don’t have a Billy Graham Rule, I have a black man in ministry rule and most black men I know do as well. We all have protocols.
9. For me, personally, I’d say that I’ve experienced the greatest degree of white female supremacy not in conservative spaces (probably cuz I kept more distance) but in white & progressive spaces and among the white survivor community. I tread most carefully in these spaces.
10. Over past 8 years of soul care ministry, the vast majority of my counselees have been white women who I’ve counseled alongside my wife. Many of them were survivors & some are still close friends. In my work now tho, there are reasons I’m seeking to prioritize minority spaces.
