(THREAD) White friends, we have a problem in our country. And what we've done to this point has not worked. In fact, it's made things worse. This is hard to admit, because racism is ugly and highlights the worst part of our collective humanity.
Step 1 to solving the problem is to admit that, at some level, we all are part of it. This is not only the first step, it's the hardest. But it's critical. Otherwise, if instead we convince ourselves that true racism and white supremacy is restricted to the worst of the worst...
(Charlottesville 2017, cops killing black people, white people saying outlandish racist things), we can absolve ourselves of the matter altogether. And nothing will change. This is what the vast majority of us white people have done for years, and we see where we are now....
Step 2 is to accept responsibility for doing our own work to educate ourselves. It is not the responsibility of people of color to explain racism to us. Let me repeat: it is not the responsibility of people of color the explain racism to us. The problem is ours, not theirs.....
