In 1667, Portuguese Viceroy of Goa banned Hinduism and banished Hindus out of Goa. The Padres went even further and began targetting the poor Hindus for conversion.
Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja's pressure against these atrocities was so firm that the Portuguese themselves persecuted the Jesuits pre-emptively and burned down their houses as a show of submission to Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja!
Finally being convinced of their insincerity, Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj attacked Goa. He demanded the prominent four fanatic Padres to convert to Hinduism. On their refusal, beheaded them and wreaked havoc in the region, almost completely destroying Portuguese Goa.
So destructive was Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja's Goa Campaign that the Christian ruler and his Viceroy had to revoke their fanatic decree!
The other nefarious party in the western coastlines, the Siddis, committed brutal atrocities and kidnapped the Marathi Brahmins. Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja applied pressure on the English to swifty take action on his behalf and punish the culprit Siddis and free the Brahmins.
The English did it and saved their estates from being devastated by the Marathas!
That is how Dharma survives!
This incident throws light on Shivaji Maharaj's conflicts with Portuguese, English, Siddis and Christian Missionaries. Even his raids carried a deeper purpose.
