All the traditional korean elemental aesthetics and actual historical references in the Daechwita MV- a thread
The clothes that the king in the MV was wearing were influenced by the traditional "dragon robes" that only people of royalty had the priviledge to possess.
The giant painting inside the king's palace at the back of his throne is called "IIwol Obongdo" which was a symbol of "royal authority" in ancient korea.
The sun, moon, five mountains, pine trees and waterfall.
The sun, moon, five mountains, pine trees and waterfall.
The throne on which the king is sitting is called the "dragon or the phoenix throne". Its usually very bright but since the king in the MV is a tyrant the thrown is under a shadow of darkness.
"Yongsang" is where the king sits, "Injeongjeon" is the royal work space(mainly referencing to the framework of the Changdeokgung Palace) and it's mentioned in the top of the building. Only this tyrant's workplace is full of bowed heads and they don't even dare to raise them.
Since the MV is set during the Joseon era, when the unknown commoner persona of Yoongi says-
"born a slave,but now a king"
The Joseon era saw extreme strictness and intolerability in class systems. So for a low born to become a king is next to impossible, but he made it happen
"born a slave,but now a king"
The Joseon era saw extreme strictness and intolerability in class systems. So for a low born to become a king is next to impossible, but he made it happen
The next very important historical reference is when the tyrant king persona of Yoongi says
"Berserk tiger Gwanghae flow"
Gwanghaegun of Joseon was the 15th king of the Joseon dynasty during the 17th century.
"Berserk tiger Gwanghae flow"
Gwanghaegun of Joseon was the 15th king of the Joseon dynasty during the 17th century.
As an eighteen year old prince,he led the korean army towards victory in one of the biggest wars or that era against the japanese invasion. A royalty riding beside commoners breaking the strict class system of Joseon era gave people hope in the throne's successor.
But the path towards the thorne was so full of dirty politics played out by his own father and brothers that it corrupted Gwanghae and turned him into a paranoid k*ller, lustful of power, the once noble prince became a violent and reckless tyrant.
During the Joseon dynasty era, the rule to maintain clarity was that if people had any serious complaints, they'd bang the gong outside the kings palace and someone from the royal court would appear to solve their problems.
But not with this tyrant, in his rule, the sound of the gong only followed with slaughter. Zero tolerance.Beheading was his passion. Actually all the kings of the Joseon dynasty shared this passion with him only the number of heads to hang as decoration were comparatively lesser.
Hanging the head of the enemies executed in the Joseon Dynasty was a showcase of power. It was called "Hyosu". The executor during Gwanghae's rule was called "Sinmungo".
Now let's talk about the unknown commoner's persona of Yoongi, he shares the same scar as the king.He wears a traditional korean hat called "satgat",usually used by farmers to protect themselves from sun & rain. But also often handy for spies who want to hide their face & identity
The frame over this unknown Yoongi's den has "Bulbogeumok" written on it. 'Yuyu Bulbogeumok' is from the book 'Confucius'. It means 'classical scholar and the one who doesn't value materialistic riches'
The key he grabbed from the box seemed to be made of coral and jade which were extremely valuable at that period of time. Indicating the speciality in him and what he's about to do.
After the rebellious coup, he was captured by the kings guards and the place he was put in was called "Jeonokseo", the fiery prison of the Joseon era
The next scene is very vital because the king has released his hair.Joseon Dynasty followed strict courteous discipline so for a king to let his hair loose like was seen as vulgar indecency and that means he has finally lost all composure and is gradually going insane.
When the mangani drags the rebel Yoongi infront of the berserk king for execution, the rebel starts banging his head, chanting"Daechwita"aka the king has arrived, calling himself the king infront of the king, other heads who were bowed down join him, indicating the extreme rebellion
Gwanghaegun was overthrown with a rebellious coup lead by the people & royal court members who were simply sick of him.The berserk king artfully swinging his sword with his hair open potrays the turmoil of his mind. This traditional korean sword dance is called Samulnori.
When even the executioner dropped his sword to bowed down to the lower born Yoongi instead of the king Yoongi, he cut his bindings and handed him a gun. Now these ancient guns were called "hwaseungchong" during the Joseon era and were only limited to royal use only.
I've seen many interpretations of the link between these two personas of Yoongi and I also have my own theory. But that shouldn't be a part of this thread.
Ending the thread with,
"Daechwita"was the declaration song introduced with the rule of Joseon dynasty to announce the arrival of the king.
"myeonggeum IIha" means "ring the gong once", "harapsinda" means "to order us"
The expression is "the king is coming to order his ARMY"
