Ending the killings of Black people by police and the terrorizing of Black people by white women (like me) with cell phones is not going to happen by rooting out bad apples. There are clearly too many.
The Black experience in the US is not the white experience. Rules are flipped around for harm instead of help. Protectors are often peers instead of the ones our communities hire to protect.
We see this most obviously when a cell phone footage of a racist act spreads. But it goes through all systems.
I need to strengthen my reflexes to make sure I always ask whose reality a policy works for. The Black experience will not be the white experience as long as racism is woven through our society. (And that's a long time at this pace of change).
And it's not just Black and white, but if we can fix systems and policies to protect and serve Black people, then I expect our equity skills will be strong enough to apply that awareness toward equity by color, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexuality, social class, etc.
The job is ours to do. All of ours to do.
