This month's we've chosen to celebrate books Christie dedicated to a friend or relative... Here's a few of our favourites, and the stories behind them! From The Body in the Library

Nan Watts was a childhood friend of Christie. At first they were suspicious of each other, since Nan was a boisterous girl, and Christie was quiet and well-behaved, and people told Nan to be more like Agatha! After an awkward period, the ice broke and they became close friends.
In Christie's personal writings, she noted that she missed Nan as she could talk about 'the old days' with her. This is a sentiment Miss Marple echoes in A Murder is Announced
.

The dedication from A Caribbean Mystery reads
'To my old friend
John Cruikshank Rose
with happy memories of my
visit to the West Indies.'
It struck us as such a lovely way to thank a friend for time spent on holiday together

John was an architect friend of Christie and Max. He served as an architectural draftsman at Ur with Max and Leonard Woolley. Christie met him in 1928. She called him "a beautiful draughtsman, with a quiet way of talking, and a gentle humour that I found irresistible."

Christie's dedications often show her amusing nature. We particularly like the one from One, Two, Buckle My Shoe
:
To Dorothy North
who likes detective stories and cream,
in the hope it may make up to her
for the absence of the latter!

Dorothy is the 12th Baron North's daughter-in-law. Dorothy and Agatha were good friends in London during the 30's. Dorothy is the mother of Susan North, Rosalind's great friend. Dorothy presented the 18-yo Rosalind at court, because Agatha couldn't (as she was divorced).

What is your favourite book dedication that you've read? It's fascinating what you can find out about someone from just a few choice words at the front of a book
