Week 10 of @NavigatorSurvey tracking poll: The great mask debate of 2020 isn't much of a debate at all. A classic case of a silent majority. 74% of the country self-identifies themselves as "pro-mask" while just 18% say they are "anti-mask."
Trump is out of step on masks as 65% disapprove of his not wearing masks, while just 27% approve. It's rare to see a 60%+ disapprove on any Trump metric because GOP voters typically hold strong for him. Voters also strongly support requiring elected officials to wear masks.
Meanwhile, our tracking poll this week continues to show Trump's approval rating on the pandemic deeply under water -- 55% disapprove and 41% approve.
Voters continue to hear far more negative things than positive things about Trump's handling of the pandemic. What are people hearing that's negative? Three clear themes -- not wearing masks, taking unproven drugs, reopening too soon.
We have been tracking worries around the pandemic and added a new item this week -- the worry that others aren't following precautions like wearing masks. That is now in the top tier of worries along with nursing homes, 2nd wave, and recession.
The public also disapproves of the President taking hydroxychloroquine by a clear margin. They are more split on whether they believe he's actually taking it. GOP voters say they think he is while Dem voters are more likely to not believe it.
We asked people to use one or two words to describe their reaction to hearing that Trump is taking hydroxychloroquine. Well, I'll let you read the word clouds.
Meanwhile, 55% oppose and 40% support a national reopening in the next few weeks. That's higher support than it's been but the change is being driven entirely by Republicans, as Democrats and Independents actually are moving the other way.
At the state level, voters are split between their own state "moving too quickly to reopen" (40%) and "getting the timing about right on reopening" (38%), while just 17% say not moving quickly enough.
