Even on the most generous interpretation of Cummings' plight, isn't it a failure of government that a person with Cummings' privilege felt he had to travel 260 miles for emergency childcare? What does the government expect somebody *with no options* to do in that situation?
This is the kind of angle I would have preferred to see from the left rather than the narrow focus on rule-breaking. This and the fact that the kind of leniency the right and the state in general is willing to afford to people of privilege is not extended to other groups.
Instead people chose to take a moralistic tone that may chime well with conservative voters and put a dent on Tory polling, but doesn't really do anything to address any substantial issue around power, state provision, the law, or any other host of issues we could be raising.
There is no shortage of people focusing on the rule-breaking and the obvious lies. The UK media have woken up from their coma now that theyre comfortable with the opposition and the story is a nice and simple one. But the left should be making points that aren't already out there
