I've seen a lot of people get up at Legend of Spyro for being dark and edgy, saying that Spyro is cute/happy and that's it. While I do like the cute tone of the Reignited Trilogy and Classic games (even though I've never actually played them, I think the graphics and-
- environments are enough to speak for themselves), I like the darker tone of LOS too. Life isn't always happy. It has its ups and downs, its lights and darks. I think sometimes even cuter/happier series need a bit of dark in them somewhere, because going through trials is what-
-brings out emotion and character inside someone. It shows the REAL person inside the character. It's one reason why I gravitate towards darker stories and why I write fics with darker themes involving death, war, etc., because it shows character development and makes-
-a character believable and relatable. LOS could have done a better job at showing emotion in the games, such as in Ignitus' death, but it's created a darker atmosphere that allows for some interesting expansion in fanfics, which is one reason why I love LOS fics so much.
You can explore these characters so much more in depth and actually pick them part as a character and look at what makes them happy, sad, angry, and the lot. Especially with a character like Cynder. She's my favourite character to write because of it.
Even video game characters need to be believable. It makes it a lot more engaging having a character that the viewer/player/reader can relate to and perceive as a real character. No one's life is always happy. We all have low moments and trials we have to overcome. While the-
-Classic/Reignited games are all challenges Spyro has to face, to me he isn't affected or bothered by it too much. What LOS did was make it personal to Spyro and make him actually have to fight to keep going and push through the trials. It made him a lot more 'human' because-
-he actually struggled. On top of that, he was making decisions that someone his age would not normally make. Very hard decisions. Ever since ANB, with him rescuing Cynder even though she tried to kill him and the guardians. With Ignitus' death, he was challenged emotionally-
-and had to overcome his rage and grief that was personified in his dark form. Those are just a few examples, but Spyro was challenged on a deeper level, rather than just 'level difficulty'. Again I haven't played the Classic/Reignited games so if there are any scenes where-
-Spyro is challenged emotionally/morally, let me know. I'd love to have a discussion over this. But from what I've heard and seen, Spyro in those games always has that happy outlook on everything. In LOS, there was some struggle that we saw in Spyro (although I would've liked-
-to see more).
Anyway this rant has been way too long lol; this is just my thoughts on LOS and being the darker, edgier reboot of Spyro. Taking a darker tone is something that I think is good to explore to expand on the characters more. Let me know your thoughts; I'm interested.
