Story time for negotiating salary:
- I recently turned in my two week’s notice at my current job, as I’m moving and taken an opportunity elsewhere. So standard practice typically is to ask to us current company that match but honestly I had no intent on staying and frankly the
..... salary jump was very significant that frankly I didn’t believe they’ll even consider matching. Now back to the story, when I turned in my two weeks, of course my boss wasn’t happy to see me go, but what was shocking or a huge learning/ teaching moment for me was this.......
... my boss and his boss had asked if I was open to them matching the offer, now this was pretty significant because it just showed me that this company valued me to the point where they were willing to pay 20+% on top of my current base pay to keep me.... what’s my punchline?
If you’re a high performer at your job and you know you’re a high performer at your job and you feel you deserve to be paid more, depending on the nature of your relationship with your manager (this part is very key definitely gauge this and think through this thoroughly first)
... speak with your manager about a higher pay, especially if you’re feeling you deserve more. I’ve always felt like I deserved to be paid more, but never spoke up, and I didn’t realize till now that my company was willing to pay me much more given my performance. In fact my....
... manager was slightly disappointed I never even gave them the chance to match but by rebuttal to him was this and simple.... if y’all always believed I was worth more why didn’t you pay me more? He had nothing to say. Anyways don’t sleep don’t wait for your manager to offer it
... understand your company, the culture, the environment and the nature of your relationship with your manager and if it permits ask for that pay raise.... mine definitely did, but I was just sleep!
... it’s also worth noting I’m not “underpaid” compared to other young scientists in our R&D dept... we all talk and we all discuss salaries and we were all paid around the same band because that had always prevented me from asking for more, but the gag here was I was valued.....
.... much higher than they were. Anyways know your worth, that’s my talk for the day. Definitely a learning moment and thankful I got to understand this so early in my career
For those who may ask how do you know if you’re a high performer? Well one there’s a sense of self, I feel like people will just know if they are or if they aren’t, you’ll also have a reputation in the office and trust me if you are... your manager will definitely point it out
...high performers on any team make their managers look good to higher ups.... 2. My company was fairly easy we had a ranking system, so it doesn’t get much more direct than that, you’re a slacker? Bottom 10-20 percentile.... high performer? Top 1-5% percentile and so on...
