About the term "The Fourth Estate"

It's not used a often nowadays, but it describes the press. It comes from the concept that there were 4 great pillars holding up society

Without all 4, society crumbles

1/...
The pillars are: legislative, executive, and judicial branches... and the press, to hold the others to account.

You can think of these as:

- The government in power
- Parliament
- Law courts
- And the press
Now think of this govt.

- They lied to the Queen
- Supreme Court found they had been contemptuous of the law
- Cummings was personally found in contempt of Parliament, and so was the govt.
- And in lying to (or avoiding) major broadcasters, they are contemptuous of the press
Doesn't matter what your political views are. The facts are plain, and have been proven in courts.

They are attempting to demolish the pillars that support society: decent government, functional parliament, equal laws, and scrutiny.
So you can try to shrug off the ludicrous Cummings affair

And you can try to justify the lies and contempt and amorality, and claim it's Just Remainers Moaning Again

But this is important. When this stuff breaks, it cannot be made again
It took us 1000 years to get to the place we were in 2010.

A place where we had a settled, stable agreement about how the country functions.

Where power could be elected and ejected.

Where a moderately honest media could shame relatively decent people into behaving.
And to achieve Brexit, or continue your culture war (which I bet you can't even define, other than "I want to smoke in pubs" or a series of flags and 🤣emojis) you're prepared to burn all that to the ground.

Well not me. I won't let this go, cos it's too important.
It's not just about Cummings. He's just one man.

But if he gets away with this, we have lost something vital. He has shown "they" can get away with any blatant lie, hypocrisy or contempt.

And right now "they" are Tories, but in future it might be somebody YOU oppose.
We are at a vital moment in history, and we should all understand that.

If this is allowed to pass, we, as a society, will have shattered something irreplacable.

So Tory, Labour or Monster Raving Loony, we need to fight for this. Or we'll regret it forever.
