Clarifying some stuff about the #FreeKesha [A THREAD]
Just a brief recap:
Kesha was abused by Dr. Luke for years, in 2014 she came forward and started a legal battle. In 2016 she was denied her freedom, in 2020 she was ordered to pay over $300K (late royalties).
This thread is to clarify some stuff people don't understand or know.
I'm going to start on with the fact that the judge who denied Kesha's freedom, Shirley Kornreich, is married to an attorney whose firms represents Sony Music. But now I'm just going to jump to the clarifications:
Many people ask why Kesha didn't come forward before or why she denied it back in 2011 (which I find quite weird why She was being asked those questions in 2011).
Many people thought for instances that Kesha was decanting which is often mistaken for RECANTING
In 2011 she did state that Dr. Luke never raped her, however people seem to not understand how RECANTING is a very common part of the coercive domestic violence and abuse cycle. Specially when there's been a long term personal or professional relationship
Also let's not forget abusers often have POWER, WEALTH and INFLUENCE that they'll wield over their victims in order to perpetuate violence as well as maintain silence.
Now that I cleared about the whole 2011 thing let's go for something MANY people ask "Why didn't she reported when it happened".
Let me remind you that victims often may take days, weeks, months, years, if EVER due to the fact there's fear, shame and re-traumatisation...
Also, let's not forget that violence against women runs the music industry. Kesha is just an example of many victims in the music industry who have been silenced for YEARS.
Dr Luke has said that "she lied" to get out of her contract which Kesha has stated that She's willing to work with Sony as far as she doesn't work with Luke.
Let me remind you that only from 2 to 8% of rape allegations being legally deemed unfounded
Also Dr Luke did not pay Kesha her royalties for her music specially Timber after its HUGE success. 98% of Abusers often put their victim's finances on ice in order to have even more control or to ensure they have no place to go. Or in Kesha's case kind of like having her +
+sign in a unbreakable contract that still grands Dr Luke publishing rights over her songs, granting him control over her entire career
I just clarified some stuff people like to use against not only Kesha but many sexual assault victims. I just want to said that the pre trial is in November which means that the end of all of this is coming. #FreeKesha
