Phenomenon that interests me - we see aggressive bids to hold govt to account (which is good, on the whole). But the same people often demand a certain immunity for themselves or friendly institutions - their bona fides shouldn't be impugned, or ulterior motives questioned. 1/3
And yet - of course the press (& many others) have an axe to grind with Dom C, regardless of any wrong by him. Of course campaigners & MPs cooked up legal reasons to fight Brexit in the courts. We'd be fools just to take their word for it that they were doing anything else. 2/3
I suspect the double standard partly arises from the ideology that executive power is uniquely threatening, & should attract unique scrutiny. Fine, but it doesn't follow that those scrutinising are entitled to our gullibility. That fundamentally misunderstands our public life.
