The 6 denarii in question. The oldest is top left. This one is a denarius of the Roman Republic & it was minted in Rome in 138 bc!! On the right of it is one of my favourite finds. Although I try not to have favourites, this one is. It’s a legionary denarius of Mark Antony...
..this one was most probably minted while Mark Antony & his legions we’re in Greece in 32/31 bc. Bottom right is another denarius of the Roman republic. This example was minted in Rome in 46 bc. Bottom left is a denarius of the Emperor Vespasian, minted in Rome in 77/78 ad...
..finally we have a denarius from the reign of the Roman Emperor Augustus, this one was minted in Rome in 15 bc-13 bc & is pictured above. The bottom picture is of a denarius of the Roman Emperor Domitian & this one was most likely minted in 88/89 ad...
6 denarii, 4 of which were struck in Rome before the birth of Christ & were brought to Britain before being lost or as the museum suspects, buried. They’ve been there ever since. The Saxons moved over the land, medieval folk did too, as did the Tudors, the Georgians & Victorians
..I can say this with some certainty as I’ve found items from all those periods in the same field. And all of those ancient people were blissfully unaware of what the Romans had left right beneath their feet...
...I’ve said many times before that it’s a privilege to be able to unearth these items & I truly mean it. And as much as I’d like to find something that ends up in a museum one day, I’m extremely glad that these 6 are coming home 🕺🏻🕺🏻🙏🏻😂
