imo building a staple wardrobe is the first step to becoming more sustainable in your fashion decisions for the long term. avoid pieces you can only wear in one way and take the time to find good quality, comfortable basics that you love. the outfit possibilities are endless.
I’ve personally found that working on curating a wardrobe of basic staples means I’ve always got options, my pieces don’t die with the trends, and all my tops can be worn with all my bottoms etc. I add in more statement bits and pieces as I find them, only if I truly love them.
you don’t have to buy everything new in the process either, shop your stash! almost everyone has some of the basics already. your favourite jeans? your cosiest jumper? take some time to think about new ways to style them and they’ll feel brand new.
another way I love to incorporate sustainability into my wardrobe is by upcycling/fixing. the top with the stain on the hem? crop it, tye it, tuck it! use it to patch those jeans with a hole in the pocket. the easiest way to be unique with your style and so fun to get creative.
buy & consume less. when you’re online shopping, as you reach the checkout, set a 3/6/24 hour timer on your phone then close the app. If you can still remember exactly what you had in your basket those hours later, and still love it, buy it. If you can’t, you don’t love it enough
if you’ve got fabrics so worn or damaged they can’t be donated, resold or reworn- then donate them to a youth club, your local girl guides group, a school textiles department, a playgroup/ nursey etc. Somewhere they can be used to craft, maybe for collages or sewing practice.
