GCSEs will ultimately judge the quality of education provided during this period, says Nick Gibb. We are giving free technical advice to schools on how to get the best out of online platforms. But he says children need to go back to school as remote learning will never be as good
If any child shows symptoms they will be tested and sent home, says Gibb. More cleaning and hand-washing are all being used to ensure safety, he says.
Gibb says schools will be told to prioritise pastoral care when pupils return.
Gibb asked how confident he is that system for awarding calculated grades will not adversely affect disadvantaged groups and BAME groups. He says a "great deal of deliberation" has been undertaken by Ofqual on this. There is a "big burden" on teachers to be as fair as possible.
Regarding calculated grades, Gibb says teaching staff "will be as fair as they possibly can be within human frailty".
Gibb is asked which solutions were looked at for mitigating unconscious bias in the education system. He says you could use national data and apply different rank orders - but it is "so difficult to do".
Government is working with universities to make sure they are being as flexible as possible with start dates for pupils who elect to take exams in the Autumn, Gibb says.
