Having lurked around the forum, twitter and some of the slack groups for some time I thought I’d share a little bit about my experience of FI so far, in the hope that others starting out may find it useful… (thread) #footballindex
I joined FI towards the back end of the most recent January transfer window. I’ve spent a lifetime playing FM and fantasy football (most recently togga scoring rules) and I also spent a fair bit of time trading on fifa ultimate team and playing internet poker.
I started off by going small and making a few pretty terrible trades based on players that score well for me in togga scoring (a fantasy football matrix that takes into account things like headers won, key passes etc.). This didn’t really go to plan, my oldest holds are below…
I still have confidence in a player like Trossard at his current price but I bought in originally at over a pound. I distinctly remember comparing him to TAA at £7 (another FF favourite of mine) in my head and thinking bugger that I can buy 7 Trossards for that money.
I learnt a valuable lesson from this trade though – whilst Trossard manages to score a fairly regular 10-20 points on Togga with his tendency to shoot. He isn’t involved in the play enough to excel in the PB matrix. Quite rightfully, it is players who are influential who do well
Lesson learned – I decided to make some fairly big deposits upon the announcement of double dividends in March – I continued to spread myself fairly thin but bought some PB centred players that I thought would do well
I bought a few shares in the likes of Rashford, Kane, Haland, Hakimi, Havertz, Gnabry etc. and then my port was crushed by Covid. I did however, retain confidence in the platform and these players – if they were value before football stopped – they will be value when it returns
Despite my port being in the red – I decided to deposit fairly big for my current stake once again and bought shares in a number of young players I liked the look of and this worked out well – caught a couple of rises and sold up a couple.
Armed with a bettter idea of how I was going to value players thanks to an indexgain sub and a couple months of listening to @figuide pods I now felt more confident and started to buy 10s of shares rather than my previously very small stakes and this has worked out pretty well.
However, what I’ve found perhaps most useful have been the debates/arguments around players’ comparative value on FI twitter/slack. Whilst some don’t seem to enjoy these, I’ve found being able to see the thought process of experienced traders in how they value players real useful
So long as you’re able to identify the blatant pump and dumps, it’s been quite eye-opening. Based upon these debates and my own research I am in the process of trimming my port down to about the 20 players I have most confidence in for the coming months
It’s a strategy, that after a couple of recent rises seems to be paying off for me. Currently sitting on a £2000 port, 15% of which is profit. A turn around I’m quite happy with considering I was losing money about 2 months ago.
