people with bleeding vaginas,
THIS IS THE RIGHT TIME, yes during a pandemic, to consider menstrual cups. in the next couple of months, you can really get used to it while at home all the time, from putting it in to taking it out, cleaning, etc.
why should i use a cups? thread!!
1) if you have horrible cramps, they will be your saviour. there's no science yet to back this but a lot of people who use it will agree. i think since it's in your vagina, the uterus puts in less effort to push out the blood (wall lining)
2) you can keep it in for upto 12 hours NO WORRIES and SLEEPING?? just. amazing. it adjusts perfectly to your cervical canal at night so you dont feel it
3) YOU DO NOT FEEL IT IN YOU and if you feel the stem, you can chop part of it off (not when it's in your vag silly). if it hurts, you haven't put it in properly
4) you'll say tampons have these pros too, but tampons can cause toxic shock syndrome which is deadly but cups do not!! also tampons have to be discarded but you just have to dump out the blood in cups. also tampons dry out your vag.
5) sanitary napkins are straight up horrible for you. they say cotton but most barely have any. there is plastic, bad chemicals and all of that enters your vagina. it is HORRIBLE for the environment too. i mean, it has plastic..
AND any smell you think your period blood has? comes from the pad. the fact that you blood sits in the pad for that long. they can cause fungal infections and some say they're carcinogenic.
6) cups are an investment. you dont have to buy pads and tampons monthly. they are travel friendly!! you can carry it around EVERYWHERE in a cute little bag (most of them come with one)
7) NOT EVERY VAGINA HAS A HYMEN. some vaginas also have hymens that break and reform. most of women's hymens have already broken. virginity is not lost if you finger yourself or if you put a menstrual cup up there. you lose your virginity (if you believe in it) when you CHOOSE to
8) period blood is beautiful. pads and tampons make us think it's disgusting but once you see your own blood, it's a spiritual experience. the blood is thread-like, dark, rich, nutrient filled. it does NOT smell at all and you will NOT die if you touch it. it's just fetus food
9) you will become best friends with your vagina. And who doesnt want to? it's yours and part of you and you should know it like you know the back of your hand. you will put your fingers all up in it and understand how big the cavity is.
10) the yucky wet feeling as though you're wearing a diaper, gone! no leakage too. your underwear is gonna be dryy
yes it might hurt. but not once you get used to it. there are different methods of putting it in and taking it out, you can experiment. i'll list them below.
TL;DR: cups are cheap, environment friendly, so comfortable, travel friendly, vagina friendly, easy disposal, fun
tampons dry out your vag and cause toxic shock syndrome
sanitary pads are bad for the environment, expensive, yucky, difficult to carry around, bad for your vagina
so when buying a cup, some people specify sizes. though your vagina can fit any size, you may not be ready to insert the bigger ones if you don't have sexual experience. so go for the small ones. for lesser pain, stick with softer, thinner cups because they're more flexible.
thick cups may be a little scary to insert. there are many folds but the one below is what i recommend (the punch down fold)
when you get the cup, boil it in water for 2 min. use a fork or tongs to keep the cup floating in the water (if it touches the base, it might melt) store in a breathable pouch (most come with one). clean it this way after every period and before the next one.
for the first insert, do it after you shower (your vag will be wet, lubrication) lie down on your bed with legs spread. play your favourite slow song. DONT BE SCARED OF YOUR VAGINA OR BLOOD because you showered so you'll be clean. find the hole w your finger, spread it and insert
you HAVE to relax your muscles. slide it in, pushing it a little. you might need to angle yourself, your cervical bone may be in the way. once it's in, put your finger in, check around the base if the cup has opened up. give it a small tug to see if it has created suction.
when you have to take it out, sit on the toilet seat, put two fingers in and hold the base. press it so the suction is released and slowly pull it out. the blood pours into the toilet. you can wash the cup with the jet spray or if the sink is close. wash your vag before u insert
for the consequent inserts, you can out one leg up on the sink, navigate and insert the cup. if that's hard, go back to your bed. you can try squatting (personally hasn't worked because my cervical muscles tense up)
okay. all of this? scary. you're too afraid of what's down there and how things could go wrong. IF YOU CAN TRUST A MAN DOWN THERE, YOU CAN TRUST YOURSELF. and if you've never explored yourself, you must. it's okay if you don't like to masturbate, etc-
-but you need to know where your clit is, where your hole is. put your finger in and see how big it is, how deep it is. what'll hold you back is fear of your own vagina and what'll free you is able to put an entire silicone cup up there for storage purposes (or extraction lmao)
and if you're still not convinced about the cup, but you really want to stop with pads and tampons because eek, 100% cotton pads are the way to go. they are reusable. they come in really cute colours and prints. you need to buy a few since you have to keep washing them.
they come in sets and also with pouches. it's definitely a little messier and i've personally never used reusable sanitary pads. but they are definitely safe, good for the environment and good for your vag. when you wash them, do it with very very little mild, no-fragrance soap-
-and dry it in the sun. you'll have to carry a replacement and you cant keep one on longer than normal pads.
