Hats off to Elizabeth Denham one woman I’ve come across who aided in the Dunkirk evacuation: “The more we got on board the lower we got in the water. As men scrambled on until there was not one inch left, and some were lying on top of each other.” 1/6
After getting back & were at Newhaven she & two friends decided to do something which seemed better than to sit waiting and doing nothing. They saw a “most beautiful launch,” it had been refuelled took the boat & headed back out again towards Dunkirk 2/6
They could see the sky getting brighter & brighter - Dunkirk was burning. They saw figures appearing on the sand dunes, British soldiers, getting them on board, full, knowing the dangers of overloading reluctantly turning back for England. Reaching by daylight. 3/6
Greeted by police in the harbour, taken off and spent a miserable night in the police station. Let out the next day due to a fuss being made. The following week summoned to an interview in London & asked how she had such a detailed knowledge of France. 4/6
After the Dunkirk evacuation her job was to find & bring back British soldiers marooned by the German onrush, then to find escaped prisoners of war and shot down airmen in Southern France and to guide them to coastal rendevous for transport to England. 5/6
Later to make contact with the Maquis and teach them how to use explosives. 6/6
