Good morning Twitter - stay with us for live updates from 9.30am as schools minister Nick Gibb is questioned by the education committee on school closures and plans for reopening.
Gibb asked if the plans for reopening schools from 1 June will be safe, and if there is "minimal risk" to teachers, support staff and children. He says decisions are "all based on the science" and a "raft of measures" will help ensure safety of staff and pupils.
Gibb refers to government's rejection of rota system. We want to make sure that children have the best approach to education and it is better for them to be in school full time, he says. And parents need to be able to return to work.
Gibb is asked if schools should be asking clinically vulnerable staff to work on school premises. He says it is safe if they are not clinically extremely vulnerable, provided the school is able to implement social distancing measures.
Gibb is asked whether test, track and trace system will be in place by 1 June. He says there will be an announcement on this today.
Gibb told the news about Dominic Cummings over the Bank Holiday weekend has undermined confidence in the government's message. Asked what DfE will do about this. The more we all adhere to the rules, the more we'll be able to make further progress in opening schools, he says.
Gibb told incidence rate varies across the country. Sage only recognises a national rate, he says. When we have track and trace in place we'll be able to more "granular" in calculating the R factor.
Opening schools to more pupils is being done with safety as "number one concern", Gibb says.
